Plot Summary
The film revolves around the love story of Mohit Chadha (Ayushmann Khurrana) and Mayera Sehgal (Sonam Kapoor), who are a young middle-class corporate couple that are ambitious and like the good life. Mohit is a marketing executive who gets promoted to a senior position, while Mayera is a financial analyst who has a passion for shoes. They decide to get married, but face an obstacle in the form of Mayera's father, V.K. Sehgal (Rishi Kapoor), who is a retired government officer and a strict patriarch. V.K. does not approve of their relationship, as he believes that Mohit will not be able to provide for his daughter and give her happiness.
V.K. challenges Mohit to pass a test, which involves playing squash with him every day at the club. He also tries to find out if Mohit is financially stable and loyal to his daughter. However, things take a turn for the worse when Mohit loses his job due to recession and has to hide this fact from both Mayera and V.K. He struggles to find a new job, while also helping V.K. with his post-retirement plans. Mohit and Mayera face various difficulties due to the lack of money and their conflicting priorities. They eventually break up after a heated argument.
Meanwhile, Mayera accepts a transfer to Dubai, as she thinks that Mohit has given up on their relationship. She also tells her father about her decision, who is happy for her. However, V.K. soon realizes that Mohit still loves his daughter and has been trying hard to make things work. He also learns that Mohit is a national level squash player who has been losing to him deliberately. He decides to reunite them and apologizes to Mohit for his behavior. He also convinces Mayera to stay back and give Mohit another chance. The film ends with Mohit and Mayera getting married with V.K.'s blessing.
